Heading Home

Day one of my travel log for this trip to Denmark.  We haven’t even touched down in Paris yet, but my family and I have been pursuing DK since noon.  Traveling with my 21-month-old nephew requires lots of special precautions.  But it is fun to have someone who will twirl and run around with you when you’re bored in the airport.

We’ll be spending a week on Tornby Strand before I head to Copenhagen.  Before I get there, though, I want to figure out what I want out of this trip.  When I was younger I was pretty smitten with Aristotle’s philosophy on happiness.  It was what I pointed my compass toward until my interest in Buddhism began rising and I rested more stock in balance.  Well, be that as it may, I’ve resolved that life can take care of the balance while I continue seeking happiness.  Denmark is a place to foster this burgeoning mindset.  I feel so connected to the land there, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone told me I was actually born out of the North Sea.  So I’ll listen to and learn from that land.  I have family there, too, who are all very dear to my heart.  I want to have intimate, meaningful conversations with them that can only be had in person.  I want my grandmother to tell me about her childhood and dreams, how to cook a Danish dish, and I want to make her laugh.  I want to tap all the knowledge I can out of my brilliant cousins and their brilliant partners.

For years I’ve thought about moving to Denmark, and with my Danish citizenship it’s becoming more of a reality than ever before.  I shall walk down the roads imagining what it might be like to walk that road thirty days in a row.  I’ll take the time to look at the schools there, and meet people my age who are studying.

That’s a fine enough checklist for now – I have a habit of spreading myself too thin and I think what I have set for myself will lead to a very satisfying vacation indeed.
